American Quarter Horse Association
Quarter horses are known for being muscular and well built, with a sloping shoulder, short back, well-defined head and stocky, athletic build. They have a clean, well-built body and neck, as well as strong, muscled hindquarters and legs. Hunter-types are typically taller with a slimmer build and more streamlined look. These types tend to resemble thoroughbreds, and are more popular in english disciplines. they have longer legs and a softer appearance. These types of Quarter horses are famed for their incredible speed and are the fastest type of horse in the world, some reaching 50 mph over the quarter-mile. this type was influenced more heavily than stock types by the thoroughbred blood that was introduced to the breed over the past century. Stock-types are typically more muscular and more compact than their hunter counterpart. They are famous for their cow sense and athletic ability as a ranch horse. They have excellent stamina, a stocky, sturdy build and make a versatile and athletic western mount. Many stock-type quarter horses excel in western disciplines in show, such as western pleasure, barrel racing, reining, western dressage, cutting and other western events. Halter-types are bred for halter showing, nothing more. They are typically over-muscled and sometimes are poorly conformed, and as such are not accepted in the Jorvik Studbook Association, as the goal of the association is to promote athletic and well-built horses.
